Unpacking Yoga Myths - Part 2

In this post, let's continue to unpack another popular MYTH about Yoga.
The MYTH on the hot seat today is: Yoga is a pill.
Let’s look at some baseline MYTHs that hold this together.
Body pain means a problem.
Problem needs an intervention
The more visible the results of the intervention, the more effective it is
In my work and training as a Yoga Therapist, I often get clients who ask me
“Can Yoga cure my disease?”
“For how much time do I need to continue to practice to cure XYZ?”
"Can you suggest me some specific postures for my problem? I don't have time for a full practice."
It’s like saying, I want to lose weight, but I don’t want to continue being conscious of my diet for the rest of my life!
Even before they can get a taste of their practice, they want to know the time-frame to commit to Yoga.
Classic Commitment Phobia that we all suffer from today!
Can we relook at this?
If my body has manifested a symptom, it is my responsibility to understand not just the symptom, but the underlying environment which caused it.
What does taking responsibility mean?
Our body speaks to us via pain among other things. The least we can do is to listen in. Listening and engaging with the body for a continued period of time, opens up a new dimension where the body is able to unleash its healing potential. This active listening and observation of the body is Asana.
Yoga is not a pill! Yoga is a lifelong endeavour to understand the complex processes of your mind which creates your experience. And it is this whole journey which helps us to achieve whatever we aspire for.
